    funny thing is that is on a BMW R1200GS motorcycle, an easy $15k+ for the bike. I suppose that didn’t leave much leftover for the GPS mount.

  20. dono1 says:

  21. nkkt says:

    just wondering, whats the point of knowing where(and how) to get to a place if you cant see whats front of you, at least most of whats directly in front?
    Looks to me that it is just in the height of eyesight. though im no expert, nor rider.

  22. Chaz says:

    @Beez

    Hell yea! Bitchin’ repurpose. The sextant rocks, you might have to slow down a bit to get a good reading.

  23. Kinda looks like Wall-e.

    I’ll bet that GPS unit is fried.

  25. Pat says:

    Ouch, dude… I hope you like having the blade end of a spatula piecing right through your visor and into your eyes in case of mishap, then.

    /new rider on Honda CG125
    /bike cost 6% what yours did but I still wouldn’t penny-pinch THAT hard
    /even though i’m probably going to use duct tape to repurpose an in-car phone holder when my new GPS-tacular cellphone arrives

    Bike screens are more for deflecting wind off your body/helmet than looking through – made of scratch-happy plastics and have no wipers, for a start (some smaller ones are actually opaque) – so it wouldn’t be that much of an issue unless you’re skirting a complicated set of potholes at low speed. With mine, at least, I find the regular instruments are quite a long way down out of the usual line of sight (sort of like having them in the middle of the steering wheel), and checking them involves looking largely away from the road for a fraction of a second. Something you may need to look at for a little longer would indeed be better mounted higher up (in this case, it’s like the typical position of a dashboard-top car nav). Plus it’s quite small so it’s not really going to take up more than a couple degrees of your forward view, the photo exaggerates its apparent hugeness.

    More bothered about the *physical* safety in this case.

  28. tahrey says:

    (still, wouldn’t one that speaks the instructions and has bluetooth so you can keep it in your pocket and just listen thru an in-helmet earpiece be a better idea all round? very much considering that meself)

  29. tahrey says:

    *sees additional photos* ok, i take it back. the ipod holder is similarly insane, but the bar-mounted sextant is epic.

  30. Jess says:

    @Beez
    The photos with the sextant have had me giggling for the last few minutes! It’s like a steampunk GPS!

  31. beto says:

    I think it’s awesome. I love it.
    Great piece of ingenuity/engineering.
    Americans need to travel a lot more to underdeveloped countries to really understand why and how people have to solve problems using what they have handy or in the trash.
    By the model of the Garming gps he doesn’t need to spend $90 on a “real mount”

  32. SPATULA CITY!!! SPATULA CITY! Hi. My name is Cy Greenbloom. I liked the spatula so much, I bought the company!

  33. Ozzie says:

    @Beez

    Does using the sextant while moving affect the handling of the bike?
