Long Term Temporary Fix

Looks like its just clamping until the cement sets?
I don’t know K, as badly rusted as that clamp is, I’d say it’s been there a while and the leak probably isn’t fixed.
Maybe they just got distracted?
it looks like they used a “T” part to connect the pipes. Then, lacking anything to connect to the third open end, they “clamped” it tight. As the (likely iron) clamp is
directly touching the copper, it rusts much faster than it would otherwise – they should have put another piece of rubber between the “T” and the clamp.
I was wondering if it were a valve, and the twisty part started leaking, so they remove it, capped it with the clamp and seal, then discovered there weren’t any valves in stock?
No, it’s definitely a T joint. 22-15-22, as determined by my trusty Mk.1 Eyeball. A valve would have a larger housing; they commonly also seem to have the seat angled at 45 deg. against the direction of the flow.

I hate when the site says “4 responses” and I look and there’s only 3. I refresh the page and there’s still only 3.
Here let me help by responding to you.
That’s ok, the site tells me 3, and there’s clearly 5
It means that there are four comments except one of them is a new commenter and needs to go through the verification from the god of this jury rig.
by the time you saw the “4 comments” and then only three, it could have been for new commenters whose postings are “awaiting moderation”
Just think- if only there were a kludge that could be applied to the comments counter so it could be featured on this site. Imagine the irony…
Easy. Just put some white out over the four and write 3 over it.There, I fixed it.
That’s like using a permanent marker on a Tablet PC.
Thats an old copper pipe, so theres no cement to set. As rusted as that clamp is, its been there for awhile, and its still leaking. That could possibly be the worst way to cap off a T….
Well, they would have done a better job but they were all out of frogs
Win.
Some kludgery will take care of that just right.
for a temporary fix that appears to have been there for quite some time, job well done!
Yum, it’s a water pipe sammich, even comes with baloney an rust coloured cinnamon! Now we just need water crackers.
“Hold it together! Don’t you start crying! We don’t need any waterworks!”
Looks like works, & has held for a long time. They should have put the insulation back though.
Damn neighbor borrowed my c-clamp 30 years ago and never returned it!..
“Hey Marge! I found the leak! It looks like we need a new clamp!”
Galvanic corrosion…
basement cat sees clampage and approves of your fail
Basement cat is a real cheap-ass.
It was then that they realized they had indeed found the fabled clamp, and that any man that could release it was truly worthy to be king and reside in Camelot.
Uh, actually the legend says he would be truly worthy to be SOAKing and would have to MOP a lot.
Darn legends. Always getting embellished.
You can’t expect to wield supreme power just ’cause some watery tart lobbed a clamp at you.
Apparently — you can. But mainly in america. Curse those camelotians!
There is nothing more permanent than a temporary solution.
You’re worried about the pipe? I’m worried about that wire. It probably has an electric current. I’m not holding the ladder for the next joker who decides to ratchet that clamp around on that pipe with a hot wire nearby.
Looks like a telephone wire.
In that case, they should clamp down on those long distance calls.
Oh pipe down with the puns already, they’re getting too brazen.
Sorry, I’ve been away a while. I’m a bit rusty.
That was to be a reply for Jon.
I’ll just clamp Jon’s and my comment together..
This kind of thing was called a “semi-permanent” fix at one of my previous jobs.
We don’t use the word “permanent” anymore. We go for “indefinite” now.
What? You think I should use these clamps of mine?
ceiling clamp is watching you caulk.
hahaha I guess it works as a long term solution judging from the rust
Welded with rust!
The red-ish stuff looks like Play Doh to me. What, no Mighty Mendit? No five-minute epoxy? No self-respecting DIYer would be caught without at least one of those items. If Billy Mays were alive, he’d be sobbing right now.
galvanic corrosion
yea galvanic corrosion caused the clamp to rust. that clamp cost alot more than fixing it right. You can tell it’s a cold water pipe, it’s turning black, the scary part is that the T is also turning black, that takes 20 years.
Something’s wrong with that clamp… OK so the differing metals might cause corrosion to happen quickly, but they’d still need immersing in water.
The fact the whole clamp is rusty, rather than just the bit below the pipe makes me think someone bodged this using an old rusty clamp and just forced it onto the leak, with some of that red stuff to pad out the gap.
