They said it was a two story house…

  2. TheAntiCat says:

Is this in the Hearst Mansion?

  3. benderunit9000 says:

the bridge to nowhere’s ugly twin.

  4. Linda says:

You have reached the twelfth step. There’s nowhere to go but back down.

  5. Muff Master says:

It’s a stairway to platform 9 and three quarters!

  6. Thomas says:

My old theatre had something similar. We also had a door on the third floor that opened into the air above the alleyway.

    • nativefloridian says:

I’ve seen a exterior door opening into air, and an exterior stairway leading to a wall. In the same dorm quad.

    • Mask says:

yeah, at this swiiming pool place theres a door like halfway up a wall. i gave my friend a leg up to try and open it but its locked or something cos the handle just kept turning round. srsly its like 5 feet off the ground.

    • Quark says:

They might have been used to haul heavy items straight into the building, rather than being bounced around going up the stairs. Sometimes they just built an access door to transport valuable items into a particular floor.

  7. UniBob says:

All staired up and no place to go.

  8. Sarkasm says:

    *end of guitar solo*
And we’re kludging a stairway, to nowhere.

  9. Carolyn J. says:

Those stairs look like they have terrazo on the runners. Some guy put his heart into making those stairs look good, dammitt!

  10. Leah says:

Stairway to heaven? You were so close. That’s on the OTHER side of town. This is the stairway to an interior wall. Yeah. They WERE going to write the song about THIS staircase, I’m not sure why they didn’t….

  11. Orv says:

I’ve seen this sort of thing in two-story houses that were converted into two apartments. Wall off the top of the stairway, and add an external stairway for the upper unit.

  12. Linda says:

It’s a kitty climbing jungle. The rail is for when humans have to rescue kitties afraid to come down.

  13. Mogma says:

Those stairs don’t make any sense at all. Apart from the weirdness of the steps, why would anyone put in an angled handrail, fixed to the supposed blocking panel, to assist you – nowhere?

    • A Random Pooka says:

The stairs look like they turn 90 degrees to the right over the course of like 5 steps instead of having a landing and a 90 degree turn. Like a spiral staircase built in a square fashion. The handrail is on the existing wall it looks like, and the new wall is the one running parallel with our line of sight on the right hand side. Not the back wall in the dead center of the photo.
      ..
      ..
      ..
As for WTF is the reason behind it? I dunno! Insanity?

      • Mogma says:

Thankyou, it was driving my eyes crazy. Yes, I think you are right, and once you have seen it the back wall ceases to look so much like a crude photoshop patch. You can even see the vague edge of the corner on the right wall. Still stupid.

  14. Todes says:

    Stairway…DENIED!

  15. Asuna says:

This is the result when the Children never wish to return to Narina

  16. Bridge says:

Welcome to the neighborhood. Here are your keys. There’s no second floor, and if you hear anything tonight? IGNORE IT.

  17. Wendy D says:

Oh, excellent! This reminds me a kludge that has bugged me for YEARS in my neighborhood. It involves a staircase and when I heard the backstory of it, I was like “…” As in, no, really, tell me the -real- story. But that was IT.

Meanwhile I would have been so fascinated by dead-end stairs as a child. Imagine what’s on the other side!

  18. Casper says:

D@mned oompa-loompas. Mr. Wonka’s not going to like this.

  19. Greg says:

    It’s an optical confusion

  20. Weekwaster says:

Sweet! Now I have places for all of my Hummel figurines!

  21. Alleycat says:

**singing in my best Robert Plant voice**

    There’s a lady who’s sure
    All that glitters is gold
And she’s buying a stairway to nowhere

  22. Sparrow says:

It’s the “Stairway to Heaven” as done by Spinal Tap…

  23. The Cat says:

This is the staircase in the Kool-aid Man’s house.

  24. Mar says:

    What are you stairing at?

  25. da borg says:

it’s Sherlock Holmes’s last case…the case of the vanishing second floor…

  26. Shaphina says:

You know how at christmas you just have to know whats in the presents? Thats how I feel about that wall.

Someone, give me a sludgehammer, stat!

  27. Me says:

Much as I hate to admit this I have one of these in my home. In the course of some major remodeling I decided to put a full wall up where there once was a set of stairs. It wasn’ like those were the only stairsto go up or down with so why not. I haven’t removed the stairs yet since I haven’t really torn into that area yet.

  28. Craig says:

Bathroom? Sure, just take a right at the top of the stairs.

  29. Daniel says:

You 3D creatures are pitiful. Just a simple stairway in 11 dimensions and here you are all hee hee hah hah I wonder what that is, I wonder who did that.

  30. Sparafucilewashere says:

It’s not the stairs lead nowhere, but it’s that the walls are slowly expanding.

  31. taylor says:

    where do they lead?

  32. Observor says:

No, you don’t understand. This feature was built specifically for slinkies and slinky cats (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T75s2RBQhSM).

  33. Frozenc says:

When remodeling, use MC Escher-brand drywall.

  34. Fireman says:

No stairway to heaven for you!

  35. Elena says:

This is going to be a problem for those who get hammered!

  36. Quark says:

I’d paint in a door at the top just to confuse people even more.

    • one small step says:

Ha ha ha ha! I was just going to come on here and suggest that they put an old door on the wall just to freak people out myself. It would be even funnier if they could find those shaved bricks or brick wallpaper so you opened it to a “brick wall”. I could have all sorts of fun!

  37. Wolfen says:

There’s the Stairway to Heaven, and then there’s the Stairway to Headache (when your not lookin!)

  38. Ess2s2 says:

    M.C. Escher would be jealous…

  39. joe says:

For all those who made stairway to heaven references, this is obviously a stairway to heaven for atheists.

  40. FoxtrotZero says:

I just can’t seem to contemplate what this is supposed to be. It doesn’t look like a cludge, it looks like some idiot built a lopsided stairway into a corner. Or someone built a wall onto the stairs…

  41. koala says:

i took this picture under a bank after a renovation :D nowadays there is a shopping center. the stairs just didn’t lead anywhere, don’t really understand why they did leave it like this..

  42. TheAntiCat says:

Maybe we should hold a “What’s at the top of the stairs” photoshop contest!

  43. RusFixer says:

Very much similar to Winchester manor.

  44. themoron says:

narnia!!!!(bang thump thump thump thump thump)what hapened to thegod dam door

  45. ChiTownTechie says:

Like the hallway from Alice in Wonderland this is the Stairway from Contracter in Bankrupcy Court…

  46. snubbobcat says:

horrible photoshopping, or editing of w/e kind that was, not very good

  47. Steve says:

Didn’t I just see sliinky cat… Dejavu… no Wait…. THERE HAS BEEN A CHANGE IN THE MATRIX !!! Quick everyone up the stairs to the hardline!! Whoa…

  48. Zearing says:

    I disbelieve!

  49. Jenn says:

Mr. Tumnus decided enough was enough and brought some Narnian contractors in to wall up the entrance so those Pevensie kids would stop bothering him.

  50. ChronicWanderer says:

    Sarah Palin’s glass ceiling.

  51. ChronicWanderer says:

Wait, no, it is just a device used to confuse Slinkys.

  52. Unregistered Member says:

    The budget Stairway to Heaven.

  53. Fiddler says:

Apparently, Tevia became a rich man.

  54. Umbra says:

In case of emergency, the exits are here, here, and… um… oh, crap.

  55. musician says:

(M C Escher ) Oh shit they found my stash

  56. Zach says:

Well, being my name is Winchester… so, naturally, I thought this HAD to have been the Winchester mansion!!! But, I know that there are other places like that, and other places that have them boarded up or whatever. Bad remodel. ‘Nuff said.
