All they need is a light that says “Chalk” and “Don’t Chalk”
When you absolutely, positively need a pedestrian crossing right now. And then you won’t need it anymore.
“Hey, Joe! This here contract says after we run the new water main we have to put the street back just exactically the way we found it – but we don’t have any of that fancy heat-set plastic reflective stripe paint stuff… Oh, I know! Hand me that spray can of Trench Marking White, I’ll have it fixed up in a jiffy and nobody will /ever/ know.”

It looks to me like the outside white lines are supposed to be there, to tell the cross walkers or bike riders where to stop for the road. The center lines look to be added by someone else after the fact who thought they knew better. I think this is not a kludge, but a well intended, failed graffiti job.

it looks like one of the roads in the city here in Mackay Queensland Australia…it was resurfaced and the lines had not yet been resprayed for the crossing….so they spray painted them on.
Not quite sure why though.
